Stock Market Competition
As the founder of UCI’s Stock Market Competition, I gained years of experience in program management. I materialized the year long competition by researching other universities’ stock competitions, planning the logistics of the competition, and coordinating educational investment events. Unlike other investment competitions that focus on return on investment, I emphasized financial literacy growth and marketed towards beginners. After creating the blueprint, I secured $15,000 by contacting potential partners and sponsors. As the program kept growing I formed a 13-person management board that included directors of finance, outreach, marketing, and education. By the end of its pilot program, we held an Orientation, 8 workshops, and an award ceremony with 300+ participants. While speaking with the participants, I realized that students were inept in personal finance such as credit cards and taxes. Thus, I founded The Financial Literacy Association (FLA) which aimed to provide the knowledge required to manage their finances. Now, along with the competition, FLA hosts bi-weekly personal finance workshops.
Lim really hit home with all aspects of the competition. There are plenty of resources available to you, you just have to take the initiative. It was a great experience, and I know that I still have a lot to learn.
